LITTLE CURRENT—The Manitoulin OPP detachment was requested to do a wellness check of a male at a residence in the Northeast Town on the evening of Monday, February 2. Due to the remote location of the residence (kilometres past the “Steps” at the end of the Green Bush Road) and a severe winter storm, that check was delayed until the following day and revealed a tragedy.
With the assistance of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF), the officers located a burned residence and upon further investigation human remains were discovered inside. Due to the state of the remains (the building was completely consumed in the fire) identification was delayed until recently.
The Manitoulin OPP released a statement late last week indicating that “The identity of the deceased has been confirmed by the Coroner’s Office, the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-OFPS) and the Centre of Forensic Science (CFS). He has been identified as Jason Mabott, a 47-year-old male from the Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands.”
The release also notes that the fire is not considered suspicious at this time.
