Pedestrian dies after being struck by transport truck on Hwy 17

(Sudbury, ON) – On March 14, 2016 at approximately 9:20 p.m., officers from the Sudbury Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian on Highway 17, in Nickle Centre (Wahnapitae).

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Sudbury Fire Departments were also dispatched to the scene. Investigation revealed that a pedestrian stepped into the driving lane of an eastbound transport truck and was struck by the truck’s right front corner.

The pedestrian, Chase READ, 30 years of age from Nickle Centre, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Northeast Region OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators were dispatched to assist Sudbury OPP with the investigation. Highway 17 was shut down to one lane of traffic for a little over three hours and has since been reopened.
