AUNDECK OMNI KANING—With 259 votes cast in the Saturday, August 26 Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation election, incumbent Patsy Corbiere was returned to office with 189 votes to challenger Max Abotossaway’s 68 votes. There were seven rejected ballots for chief.
Joining Chief Corbiere at the Aundeck Omni Kaning council table are Hunter Abotossaway with 103 votes, Marvin Assinewai with 102 votes, Frank Corbiere with 113 votes, Janet Esquimaux with 105 votes, Ingrid Madahbee with 118 votes, James McComber with 115 votes and Karen Shokan with 108 votes.
Remaining results were: Craig Abotossaway with 88 votes, Bryan Corbiere with 94 votes, Eric (Zeke) Corbiere with 54 votes, Zachary Corbiere with 75 votes, Courtney Kurek with 81 votes, Scott Madahbee with 90 votes, Elaine Nahwegahbow with 81 votes, Lois Nahwegahbow with 55 votes, Sue Ramsdin with 71 votes and Donald James Trudeau (McGraw) with 74 votes. There were five rejected ballots and a blank result for Robert Howell.
“I am pleased the community has seen fit to elect me to my fifth term,” said Chief Corbiere. “I am happy to be working for the next three years with a balanced council of men and women—each bring different perspectives to the table.”
There are challenges to be met going forward, including the resolution of the Robinson-Huron Treaty annuities settlement. “We will be working through those in a fair and considered manner,” she said, “and that goes for all the issues within the community.”
Under the Aundeck Omni Kaning custom election code adopted in 1991, the elected chief and council members serve for three years.
