Out and About in Sheguiandah

A nice patch of crocuses opened up in my back yard already. They just seemed to appear over night—purple, blue and bright yellow. It cheers up the dreary looking yard. The rain we got today was welcome as well—it will help get the frost in the ground on the move, and finally! We don’t have to talk about winter anymore!

We received a nice phone call from Aunt Dorothy Wisson last Sunday. She is doing well and still turning out quilts for her friends and family. She says she hopes to get up to the Island soon for a visit.

We were so sorry to hear about Max, the beloved dog of Rachel Hoffman from Big Lake. Our pets become such a big part of our lives and losing one in such a vicious attack is really heart wrenching.

Happy anniversary to my brother Norm and wife Laurie. They have had 44 years of wedded bliss and we help them celebrate with a dinner and card game of which the girls were the winners!

We saw the excavator was working at tearing down the old house at Gary May’s and Lynn Bond’s on the Green Bush Road. They have built a nice new home on the same site. It must be a nice view from there of the Strawberry Channel and the mountains.

The horticulture meeting in Manitowaning was held last Wednesday evening. The Lady from Har Cor greenhouse gave a demonstration on container gardening and also an informative talk on the virus that is attacking the impatience plants. These are a favourite bedding plant for a lot of us gardeners. They grow well and have such long lasting beautiful color. The virus has now been found in Canada so be sure and talk to Cheryl about this problem before you plant this season. Also at the meeting, Ila Lloyd was presented with a certificate of achievement for her commitment to the community beautification in Manitowaning. Congratulations Ila.

There were many great articles in The Expositor this week about the many dedicated volunteers on Manitoulin. It is surprising to hear how many people give of their time and talents for the betterment of others. It is also a good thing for the person volunteering. Being involved with others and giving assistance is a good way to make new friends and be of service to the community.

The Sheguiandah museum will be hosting the annual Easter egg hunt on Saturday April 19 at the museum grounds. Last year there were over 100 children that came out for a fun time so we hope all the little ones will be able to come. Please remember to drive carefully when coming into and leaving the area as there will be so many excited children running around the parking lots.

The museum is also planning to hold an heirloom quilting show when they reopen in May. If you or you family has an heirloom quilt made by older family members and handed down through the generations you are invited to bring them to be placed on display for the show. Call Heidi at the Northeast Town office or Vicki at 705-368-1826 for more info.

I asked Jim at the post office here in Sheg if he was ready for the new hours of service we will be getting starting on April 14. I guess he does not like it any more than the rest of us do. The cut back of hours will make it pretty hard for working people to get their parcels, stamps and other services. And of course, where else can a person get such good service? Like when you forget to put a postal code on a letter you sent and it is done for you, or a message is passed on to you about a friend who was trying to get in touch with you from the village? Those things don’t happen in big cities. It seems when the cutbacks start it is the little guy that takes the biggest hits. I know when I was in business the last thing I would think of doing when hard times hit was to cut my hours so that my customers could not get into my shop. I must be from the old school of doing things

I heard a story the other day about a person who had mailed a letter. Not knowing the stamps had gone up she found her letter returned to her own mail box, so she went in the post office to buy the correct stamp for the postage to put on the letter. With the tax added on it came to 98 cents. Now of course because there are no pennies for change it did cost her a dollar anyway. Even though we are told the rates for a letter are not a dollar!

There is not too much news in Sheguiandah this week. If you would like to have news put in call me at 705-368-1826.

Hope everyone has a safe and Happy Easter with your family and friends. Keep smiling.
