KAGAWONG—The Old Mill Heritage Centre is excited to announce that History Day in Kagawong is returning to the Park Centre on Thursday August 11. The 90-minute presentation features the story of the 1914 Empress of Ireland disaster.
Known as “Canada’s Titanic,” over 1,000 passengers and crew perished in the frigid waters of the St. Lawrence River after the Empress was rammed by another vessel, sinking within 15 minutes. On board were members of the Salvation Army and band with close to 150 from their group drowning.
Historians will gather at the Park Centre on August 11 to tell the story of the Empress including current members of the Salvation Army and their 2022 band.
There will be a 3:30 pm presentation to be repeated at 7 pm. Free admission but donations to support the museum will be appreciated. Refreshments will be served. For further details contact the Old Mill Heritage Centre at 705-282-1442 or email oldmillheritage@billingstwp.ca.
