LITTLE CURRENT—The Little Current Fish and Game Club (LCFGC) is grateful for a donation the club received from members of the Oakville Rod and Gun Club (ORGC) toward the operation of the club’s new upgraded hatchery and for fishing rods for students in schools around Manitoulin who visit the local club every year to view their walleye rearing ponds.

“I find it fantastic that our club has received support from another club to for our hatchery and education program,” said Lou Shortt, president of the LCFGC. “They (ORGC) made a donation of $1,000 to our club.”

“We thought it would be a good idea to help out the Little Current Club with their fish hatchery program,” said ORGC club president Rob Rutherford. “Initially several members of our club had planned a fishing trip to the Island and to visit (LCFGC). I hadn’t planned on going at first but I’m happy I went as well.”

“A couple of our members have known Bill (Strain of LCFGC) and the guys from the Little Current club for a long time,” Mr. Rutherford said. “And we are always looking for ways to help with conservation and fish hatcheries. We had already presented a $1,000 donation to another club for their hatchery, the Almaguin club.”

“We had the opportunity to see the work that has been done by the Little Current club, and the fish they are raising in their ponds,” said Mr. Rutherford.

“They were very interested in our education program and walleye program, the hatchery and gave us a hand on our fishponds. They were quite interested in the whole process of how we raise walleye,” said Mr. Shortt.

Mr. Shortt noted, “We have been able to restock approximately 500,000 fry into Bass Creek this year. This is the first time we have been able to do this since COVID. We have had a really successful year.”

Along with viewing the LCFGC upgraded hatchery and walleye rearing ponds, the Oakville club members were also very interested in the local club’s educational program for the Grade 4 classes on Manitoulin.
