Christina Jones With six years of council experience under her belt (a part term, plus a full term), Christina Jones is running for re-election as Ward 1 representative for the Northeast Town. Ms. Jone’s Baie Fine cottage has been in her family since her grandfather built it in the 1920s, leading her to move to the area full time in the 1970s and split her time between the family cottage and her Sheguiandah home. Today, Ms. Jones shares her Baie Fine cottage with her three children, grandchildren and two great grandchildren. “Ward 1 is very unique,” explained Ms. Jones. “It’s important to stay on top of what’s occurring in our area. Two of our main issues are a lack of proper fire protection and garbage disposal.” “In terms of fire protection, I would like to see us enquiring about more fire equipment and ensuring that the municipality maintains the MNRF (Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry) fire protection coverage for Ward 1 as a first response.” Ms. Jones that said that if she is re-elected she will be going back to the council table, asking for more funding to replace fire pumps for the islands. “Currently, (Ward 1) residents pay $8 a bag to dispose of their garbage at J and G Marina,” continued Ms. Jones. “People have to bring their garbage either by boat or by car (Bay of Islands). In the past J and G had a contract with the town, which paid them to take the garbage to the landfill. I know residents would like to see that system reinstated and I would like to work towards making that happen.” Ms. Jones said that although she is running as a Ward 1 representative, she also resides in Sheguiandah and is concerned about all the wards. “I want to work hard for all of the Northeast Town,” said Ms. Jones. “The Northeast Town has a lot to look forward to and I am concerned about what I can do for all our residents.” “I think my experience on council is a strong asset,” she continued. “I have learned how to take things to council or the town office for discussion. I want to advocate for the needs of Ward 1, but if I can do something for a resident in another ward, I will do my best also. It’s important that we all work together as a whole municipality to continue to grow this community and ensure that we maintain it for future generations.”
