Nine nominated for M’Chigeeng First Nation chief, 87 for band council

M’CHIGEENG—Nominations in the September 2 election for M’Chigeeng First Nation chief and council took place at the M’Chigeeng council chambers on Saturday, July 22. Nine candidates were put forward for chief and 87 for the nine council seats. Nominated candidates have until noon on Saturday, July 29 to contact the electoral officer to confirm their willingness to stand. If they have not contacted the electoral officer by that time and date, they will have been considered to have not accepted the nomination and their name will not appear on the ballot.

The M’Chigeeng election was to be held this past spring, however issues surrounding the nomination process meant the election was postponed to Labour Day weekend.

Candidates who have accepted their nomination must submit a criminal record check (CRC) to the electoral officer no later than noon on Thursday, August 3. That CRC must be dated July 22 or later to be accepted.

The nine nominees for chief include: Andrew Bisson, Renee A. Corbiere, Brent Debassige, Linda L. Debassige (incumbent), J.P. Terry Debassige, Floyd J. Ense, Morgan F. Hare, Thomas D. Hare and C. J. Wayne Trudeau.

Advance polls for the M’Chigeeng First Nation band council elections will take place Saturday, August 26 from 12 pm to 6 pm at the M’Chigeeng Community Complex, with the election taking place on Saturday, September 2 from 9 am to 6 pm, also at the M’Chigeeng Community Complex.
