‘Watermark’—This author is Manitoulin Island’s own Jennifer Farquhar. Although she now lives in Kitchener, I am sure she hasn’t forgotten her roots. This is her first novel.

This story takes place in a Northern Ontario island named Mikinaak Island and is a mystery/ghost story combined with a woman’s journey to come to terms with her past and find her true home. A good read.

‘Quantum’ – A new series by one of my favourite authors. Meet Captain Calli Chase, a NASA officer, quantum physicist and cyber security investigator. On the eve of a top secret space mission Calli detects a tripped alarm in the tunnels deep below a NASA research centre. The danger is worse than anyone thought. A series of disturbing clues point to her twin sister who’s been MIA for days. Calli has to find out the answers to her twin’s erratic conduct and time is running out that could mean catastrophe – not just for the space program but for the safety of the whole nation.

‘Beyond The Trees’ – A journey alone across Canada’s Arctic. In the spring of 2017 Adam sets off on an unprecedented journey alone across North America’s greatest wilderness – the Arctic. A place where it is still possible to wander for months without crossing a single road or even seeing another human being. Between his starting point in Eagle Plains, Yukon Territory, and his destination in Baker Lake, Nunavut, lies a maze of obstacles: shifting ice floes, swollen rivers, fog-bound lakes, and gale-force storms. He must time his departure by the breakup of the spring ice, then sprint across nearly 4,000 kilometres of rugged, punishing terrain to arrive before winter closes in. Heart-stopping, wonder-filled and attentive to the majesty of the natural world, this book captures the ache for adventure that afflicts us all.

‘Bloody Genius’ – A Virgil Flower novel. After a renowned yet confrontational scholar winds up dead; after two feuding departments at the local state university face off on the battle ground of science versus medicine carrying their views to extremes, Virgil Flowers is brought in to investigate. Among this  group of wildly impassioned, diametrically opposed zealots lurks a killer and it will be up to Virgil to sort the murderer from the mere maniacs.

‘The Shape of Night’ – After an unspeakable tragedy in Boston, Ava Collette flees to a remote village in Main, where she rents an old house. In this isolated seaside mansion, Ava finally feels at peace…until she glimpses the long-dead sea captain who still resides there. Rumour has it that Captain Jeremiah Brodie has haunted the house for more than a century. One night, Ava confronts the apparition, who feels all too real, and who welcomes her into his world – and into his arms. Even as Ava questions her own sanity she eagerly looks forward to the captain’s ghostly visits. But she soon learns that the house she loves comes with a terrible secret—every woman who has ever lived in this house has also died there. Is the ghost responsible or is a flesh-and-blood killer at work?

Many more new books to read both at the Mindemoya and Providence Bay library.

Those cold winter nights will soon be upon us and nothing is better than to curl up in front of a fireplace immersed in a great book. You must supply the fireplace but we have lots of excellent books for you to escape in.

Our campaign to help our Island furbabies by collecting food for them has come to an end for now.  Thanks to all those who donated food/cash to help these beautiful animals.

Also kudos to all those people and organizations that do so much to help save the animals not only on Manitoulin but everywhere.
