New Ivan Wheale collection ‘Dimensions: An Artist’s Vision’ opens May 20 at Perivale Gallery

SPRING BAY—Robins may be one of the first signs of spring, but the annual opening of Perivale Gallery really seals the deal for Island art patrons. Each spring Perivale Gallery celebrates its season opening with an unveiling of the latest works by Ivan Wheale and this year the collection, ‘Dimensions: An Artist’s Vision’ will feature an eclectic ensemble that has something tailored for just about anyone’s taste and pocketbook.

“This exciting collection features original works in a variety of dimensions—for every budget and space,” said Perivale Gallery owner Shannon McMullan. “The images of the works to be featured in this exhibition will be uploaded to Perivale Gallery’s website PerivaleGallery.com/ivan-wheale/ by 7 am the morning of Ivan’s show’s opening, Saturday, May 20.”

Doors open at the gallery at 10 am, while Mr. Wheale himself will be in attendance around 2 pm to 4 pm at the gallery.

Perivale Gallery’s 2023 hours are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 19—June 16 and then 10 am—5 pm daily until September 17, or by appointment by calling 705-210-0290.

“Ivan Wheale’s paintings in watercolours and oils are strong studies in realism, capturing the atmosphere, texture and nature of the Northern Ontario landscape,” said Ms. McMullan.

Mr. Wheale was born in Sunderland, England in 1934 and settled in Canada in 1957. After living in Sudbury for several years, he moved to Manitoulin Island in 1975 where he now lives and works.

Ivan is a self-taught artist whose work appears in numerous public and corporate collections including the Queen’s Collection, Windsor Castle, the Government of Ontario, the Provincial Buildings, Ottawa, and the Lieutenant Governor’s office at Queen’s Park.

Mr. Wheale is the recipient of many awards including an honorary degree from Laurentian University, the Rotary International Paul Harris Award and the Canada Council. He was listed in the American Artists Survey of Leading Contemporaries in 1989 and has held over 94 solo exhibitions including three touring exhibitions circulating Ontario and a fifty-year retrospective at the Centennial Museum, Sheguiandah.

Mr. Wheale’s writing includes ‘The Artist’s Conception,’ Manitoulin Expositor, 1985 and a five-year weekly television programme in Sudbury. He is a past member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour and the Society of Canadian Artists. He was an art instructor at Haliburton School of Fine Arts, Elliot Lake School of Fine Arts, Cambrian College, Georgian College, the Ontario Arts Council and Laurentian University. Mr.Wheale has been a featured artist at Perivale Gallery on Manitoulin Island since 1981. Now in his 89th year, the artist continues to paint daily, celebrating the beauty of Northern Ontario.
