New Drug Alert: Carfentanil

New Drug Alert

Manitoulin Island – UCCM Anishnaabe Police in partnership with the M’Chigeeng Health Centre would like to advise the public of a serious health concern involving a drug known as Carfentanil. The drug is similar to Fentanyl but is 100 times more toxic. Carfentanil looks like table salt and can be absorbed through the skin or inhaled.

Addictions experts have said as little as 20 micrograms of Carfentanil is enough to kill a person. A microgram is smaller than a grain of salt. Carfentanil surfaced in Western Canada and more recently in southern Ontario.

UCCM Police and the M’Chigeeng Health Services warn that drug abuse has a serious impact on community safety which include; risks of fatal overdoses, violent acts and property crimes. Police and health care providers have begun to train their personnel to provide Naloxone, which blocks or reverses the opioid medication.

Police are urging the public to exercise caution with the growing presence of Carfentanil in Ontario and ask that anyone with information regarding illegal drug activity can contact the UCCM Anishnaabe Police at 1-888-377-7135 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477).
