New council sworn in at Sheshegwaning First Nation on December 11

SHESHEGWANING—An official swearing-in ceremony for the new council of Sheshegwaning First Nation was held on Monday, December 11.

In the November 18 elections Alana Endanawas was re-elected as chief, with the slate of councilor’s elected including Ann Cada, Angela McLeod, Marie McLeod and Jennifer Sampson.

In her address to council and the community, “I offered congratulations to all our council members on being elected,” said Sheshegwaning Chief Alana Endanawas. “Then we all read the oath of office and signed it.”

Along with those in attendance at the swearing in ceremony, “we also had off-reserve members who attended virtually, which was very nice,” said Chief Endanawas.

Chief Endanawas said council is focusing on several priorities for this term of council. Among them, “we will begin working on a community drug strategy,” she said. “We also want to establish a knowledge keepers advisory council, as well as a youth advisory council, to get their input and work together.”

With the youth advisory council, “I we would like to reach out to high school kids to provide input and get more involved in the community. It seems we are missing out on their input, and this is a group that has lots of ideas that would benefit the community,” continued Chief Endanawas. “Youth are our future, so it is important to get their input and ideas.”

Other projects the community is already in the process of, includes opening a new elementary school and the new community centre, with construction continuing on this new building.
