New chief building official hired for Western Manitoulin communities

GORDON—The Building Systems Committee for Western Manitoulin has announced the hiring of a new chief building official (CBO) to replace Dan Osborne, who had announced his impending retirement earlier this year.

“We (the committee) have hired an individual to take over the CBO position,” said Lee Hayden, reeve of Gordon/Barrie Island, last week. “We have hired Chris Meloche, who is the bylaw enforcement officer for Gordon/Barrie Island. Chris will now do our (township) bylaw enforcement on a part-time basis.”

Mr. Osborne announced his retirement as the CBO earlier this year.

“I have held this position for the past 23 years,” said Mr. Osborne. “I’m ready to begin another chapter in my life.” Mr. Osborne, along with his wife Lynn, owns and operates Island General Merchandise and Island Promotional Products in Gore Bay. He is also a town of Gore Bay council member, and has served in the past as Mayor.

Mr. Osborne had been on contract with the Western Manitoulin municipalities as the CBO, including Gordon/Barrie Island, Burpee and Mills Township, Billings and Gore Bay.
