LITTLE CURRENT—Low Island hosted the first soccer tournament of the year this past Saturday. The NEMI Soccer Tournament was all about having fun and developing skills, so everyone was a winner.
“Today we are having a soccer tournament with teams from all over the Island,” said organizer Michelle Anderson. “Groups that are participating today are from Wiky, Prov Bay, Assiginack and NEMI.”
The tournament attracted over 300 youth making for a very busy day. The tournament started at 8 am and continued until 5:30 pm.
This was the inaugural NEMI soccer tournament and, given the turnout, it will likely be continued in the future.
Unfortunately, most registrations closed in early April, explained Ms. Anderson, but some communities are just wrapping up, so she advised checking in with municipal recreation departments if your children are not yet registered.
The day was not just about soccer, though, NEMI events coordinator Lisa Hallaert’s and her team of summer students were on hand with a plethora of games and other sports equipment for youth to fill in the time between games.
“You couldn’t ask for better weather,” said Ms. Hallaert. “Not too hot, but sunny and cool enough for running around and having fun.”
