M’CHIGEENG—Manitoulin Secondary School (MSS) hosted the Northern Ontario Secondary School Association’s (NOSSA) tennis championships last week, scoring enough points overall to secure the NOSSA tennis championship banner.
“It was great weather and a good time for all,” said coach Chris Theijsmeijer. “MSS had the most entries for any of the schools and collected a large number of team points and won the NOSSA banner for the second time in it’s history.”
The Mustangs secured a second-place finish, a third-place finish and a fourth-place finish. Two students, Aspen Debassige and Emery Watson will be going on to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championships June 5-6 in Toronto having placed second in girls’ doubles.
Mr. Theisjmeijer noted that only first and second place finishers qualify for the provincials. “Unfortunately, many of our players and teams came third,” he said, “helpful for team points, but not enough to move on.”
Still, the Mustangs didn’t go down easy, with Aspen and Emery losing out to a team from Sudbury in a very close final match, 8-6.
