Municipal contributions to Gore Bay airport increase 5%

WESTERN MANITOULIN—Gore Bay-Manitoulin Airport partnering municipalities will see an increase in their contributions with this year’s budget.

“The bottom line is there is a five percent increase overall to all three partner municipalities (Gore Bay, Gordon/Barrie Island and Burpee and Mills),” said Lee Hayden, chair of the airport commission after a meeting last week.

Mr. Hayden said the increase “is no surprise with the cost of everything increasing. I’m actually surprised we have been able to keep the increase as low as it is.” He explained that one of the biggest reasons for the increase in the budget is that “we have to have safety audits carried out every three years on the airport and this has been carried out this year at a cost of $10,000.”

Last year’s airport operations budget for the airport was $514,000 and this has increased to $540,000 this year.
