MSS students will take ‘Something Rotten’ to the musical stage in March

M’CHIGEENG—If comedic relief is what you are craving Manitoulin Secondary School (MSS) theatre will help fill that bill with its Broadway musical comedy ‘Something Rotten!’
“We are very deep in rehearsals for our musical,” stated Yana Bauer. “The students, including students from Grades 5-12, have been in rehearsal since November.”

‘Something Rotten’ is a very funny Broadway play,” said Ms. Bauer, who pointed out while rehearsals continue, “the props are being modified and the set is a go, and the school’s pit band is amazing.”

“In 1595 comes something original…something fresh…something rotten! Brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as ‘The Bard’,” the plot reveals. “When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical.”

The cast of ‘Something Rotten’ includes Jocelyn Kuntsi in the role of Nick, Jordan Goddard as Nigel, Zack Hill as Will Shakespeare, Faer O’Leary as Nostradamus, Cameron Meawasige as Bea, Phoebe Aeschlimann as Portia, Xavi Mara as Brother Jeremiah, Lydia Pennings as Lady Clapham, Garrett Charbonneau as Shylock, Nevaeh Harper as Master of the Justice, Divine Commanda as Peter, Hannah McDonald as Tom, Ella Tasse as Robin, Alexander Leblanc as Snug, and Jaymes Simon as Francis.

The ensemble includes Robyn-Ashley McNaughton, Elizabeth Elliott, Carson Stewart, Alexis McVey, Morgan Dedman, and Dylan Kuntsi. Apprentices include Sarah Joyce, Mike Taukei and Sadie Lewis.

“We are trying to regain the momentum that we had for years which was lost from being able to put on big shows (with the pandemic),” said Ms. Bauer.

‘Something Rotten’ will premier on the MSS stage on Friday, March 3 at 7 pm, Saturday, March 4, also in the evening and new with this MSS production, Sunday, March 5 with a 2 pm matinee on the MSS main stage. Tickets will go on sale soon.
