ICE LAKE—Two Manitoulin Secondary School (MSS) Mustangs Nordic skiers qualified for the Ontario Federation of Secondary School Association (OFSSA) championships, posting very good results.

Earlier, Mackenzie Turner took first place at the senior girls Northern Ontario Secondary School Association (NOSSA) championships held in North Bay. David Wiwchar, coach of the Mustangs team, noted that Mackenzie posted a time of 15 minutes 51 seconds; passing 18 of the 19 other racers who had started up to 15 minutes ahead of her in the race. “And she was close to catching the last of them on a steep uphill to the finish.” She also joined fellow NOSSA racers for the relays to win the girls category.

Tom Wiwchar also qualified for OFSAA, having finished 11th in the senior boys division, and being part of a relay team from North Bay that won their race. As well, MSS skier Beth Wiwchar placed 14th out of 25 racers in the junior girls division.

Following that event, Mr. Wiwchar told the Recorder late last week that, “at OFSSA, Mackenzie (Turner) placed 12th of a total of 152 racers in the senior girls 5.8 kilometre race. She posted a time of 21:30.”

“Tommy Wiwchar finished 109th of 135 racers in his division, posting a time of 30:43 in the 7.4 kilometre race, taking 10 minutes off his time from NOSSAA,” said Mr. Wiwchar.
