The cooler temperatures have settled in, and unfortunately, I think they are here to stay. But the Mustangs aren’t letting a little cooler weather dampen their spirits!

On Friday, September 27, the senior boys’ volleyball team won a silver medal at the Chelmsford volleyball tournament! Then on Wednesday, October 2, the boys won their first four regular season games in straight sets in Espanola! Great job, boys!
Today, Wednesday, October 9, five students from MSS will be travelling to Orillia to participate in the Ontario Education Leadership Centre (OELC) Rural Youth Leadership Retreat. Students will collaborate with other rural students in different workshops. The five students from MSS that will be participating are Ethan Theijsemijer, Rachael Orford, Laura Orford, Jocelyn Kuntsi and Katie Chapman.
Tomorrow, Thursday, October 10, a group of MSS students will be travelling to Collège Boréal in Sudbury for a Headstrong meeting from 8:30 am to 3 pm. Headstrong is an anti-stigma initiative created by Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) for youth aged 12-18.
Tomorrow night, Thursday, October 10, are parent/teacher interviews. It will take place in the MSS gymnasium from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. This is an opportunity for parents to find out how their child/children are progressing in their courses.
A representative from Skills Canada will be at MSS tomorrow at 9:15 am to talk about skilled trades and apprenticeships. This is a great opportunity to learn all about these subjects and the career potentials that they offer!
On Friday, October 25 and on Saturday, October 26, the musical theater class is hosting a dinner fundraiser. The dinner is called Café Murder: Mystery Dinner Theater where participants question suspects and try to solve the mystery. All funds raised support the Manitoulin Secondary School Musical Theatre program’s 2020 production. Dinner begins at 6:30 pm each evening at MSS. The meal includes lasagna dinner with sides, drinks and dessert, as well as laughter, mayhem and murder. Cost is $25 a person. Admission by reservation only. Speaking of the 2020 MSS musical, this year’s musical will be ‘Bye Bye Birdie’! ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ is set in 1958 and is based on the rock-and-roll singer Elvis Presley going off to the army and its effect on a group of teenagers in a small town. Open auditions for elementary school students will be held on Saturday, November 2 from 11 am to 12 pm at MSS. More about ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ will follow in the coming weeks!
Share/Go-Green is holding a battery drive from October 22 to 25 at MSS. SHARE/Go Green is inviting community members to drop off their old batteries for this event. The battery drive is a part of the “Zinc saves Lives” fundraiser. The value of the zinc in the batteries that are recycled will be donated to the Me to We foundation for sustainable projects in the developing world.
