High school life on Manitoulin has been buzzing lately as students begin to engage in a variety of activities! From sports, to video games, to theatre, there was something for everyone this week.

One of the standout events was the OFFSA golf tournament. Our school’s golf teams, made up of some talented and dedicated students, participated in this Ontario-wide tournament. The team exhibited their exceptional skills and represented Manitoulin Secondary School with pride. Amy Smith and Ava Corbiere were placed in Collingwood for the girls’ tournament while Noah Thorpe was placed in Windsor for the boys.’

For students who prefer a microphone to a golf club, there was Karaoke in the Caf on Friday, October 13. This month’s theme for the lunchtime karaoke was ‘spooky.’ Students were able to pick their songs and sing their heart out in front of the cafeteria at lunch. Some of the songs students selected included ‘Banana Boat,’ ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ and ‘The Addams Family Theme.’ Soon, the entire caf was singing along to the student’s renditions of these popular songs. The lunch ended with students in high spirits from the fun they participated in. The MSS Student Council hopes to make Karaoke in the Caf a monthly occurrence.

The MSS robotics team’s presentation to Lion’s District A5 Commissioner was another highlight this week for the school. On Wednesday, October 11 members of Manitoulin Metal attended a Providence Bay/Spring Bay Lions Club meeting and were introduced to the Commissioner, David Kidd. The team showed Mr. Kidd the past seasons robot and gave a short presentation to display their community initiatives.

Next week, the robotics team is hosting a battery drive. Students and community members are encouraged to bring in old batteries so that they can be recycled properly and prevent the batteries from harming the environment. The zinc collected from the batteries will be sold with profits used to support children’s hospitals. Along with the battery drive, the robotics team will be hosting training sessions for new and returning members. These sessions will teach students valuable and transferable skills in different areas including, building, programming, and business. These sessions will take place after school on October 16, 17 and 18.

Mnaamodzawin Health Services will be hosting 2SLGBTQ+ Youth Video Game Nights at MSS every second Wednesday of the month from 3 to 5 pm. They offer a wide variety of games to choose from including, Super Mario Kart, Legendary Fishing and Switch Sports. All of these games are played from a Nintendo Switch and broadcast onto the big screen.

The annual MSS musical has been announced. This year’s production will be ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ Students who are eager to be a part of this production are encouraged to sign up for auditions on October 17 and October 18 from 3 to 5 pm.

That is all for this week! Until next time, go, Mustangs, go!
