M.S.S Kids in the Halls by Alexandra Wilson-Zegil.

It is almost impossible to believe that another school year has nearly come and gone. There are just seven days left until exams start and you can feel both a sense of urgency and a sense of relief building in the air at MSS. As we near exams, it’s important to think about your goals and keep your head up when things get stressful!

Monday, June 5 was the last day of scholarship workshops for the 2022-23 school year. Every Monday for the past month, Yana Bauer, a teacher at MSS, has been showing students how to effectively apply for scholarships. One of the sessions even included MSS alumnae Rachael Orford and Trish Patterson who came in to talk about their experience with applying for scholarships. There are many resources available for students to use through the workshop including a Google Spreadsheet with scholarship tracking as well as steps to take by grade to set yourself up for Grade 12 scholarship application.

Wednesday, June 7 was officially the last day of the Prom Project. For the past two months the Prom Project had its doors open for anyone in need of a suit, a dress, shoes, or other formal clothes. These clothes were donated to the school by community members to give students who didn’t have the opportunity to get formal attire for the school’s prom or graduation events. The donated clothes found new life this year through dancing or by accompanying graduating students picking up their diplomas. For anyone who has gently used prom dresses or suits, keep an eye out for next year’s Prom Project.

Thursday, June 8 was the Class of 2022-23 Graduation, affectionately known just as “Grad” by the students. Graduation is what many have been working towards all year: getting the chance to receive their diploma, smile on stage, and say “I did it!” The gym was transformed with black and gold balloons, greenery, curtains, and, most importantly, lots of chairs to accommodate this momentous occasion. The ceremony was attended by friends, family, and community members all there to celebrate the students who have worked hard to get to where they are now. For those interested in where the MSS graduates are going next year, there is an Instagram account that will tell you! @mss_grads2023 on Instagram includes information about the Grade 12s plans for next year!

The MSS robotics team is making their elementary school visits an annual tradition by visiting students across the Island this week. They have been going to various classrooms to show off their robot and teach young kids all about STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering, Math). More details on the Manitoulin Metal’s adventures to come next week!

That is all for this week! Remember to keep congratulating yourself on your achievements and learning from your mistakes. Until next time, go, Mustangs, go!
