We have officially made it to June and down to the few final weeks of school before summer break. It is getting more and more difficult to stay inside when warm, sunny days are so frequent. Now that it’s nice outside you see students playing basketball, having picnics on the lawn, and walking around the track during lunch. The only thing bogging these students down are exams which are just around the corner.

Last Tuesday, May 30 there was a bake sale hosted by the musical theater club to raise money for next year’s production. A variety of cookies, cupcakes, and other sweet treats were sold to support things like sets, costuming, and licenses for next school year’s musical.

Manitoulin Metal hosted their annual e-waste drive this week. From 3 to 5 pm Monday, May 29 to Friday and 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, June 3 community members could drop off any old electronics for the MSS Robotics team to collect and dispose of properly. This helps keep recyclable or toxic materials out of our landfills.

Tuesday, May 30 was Shadow Day, an annual MSS tradition. Shadow Day is when MSS opens its doors to Grade 8 classes across the island to help prepare these incoming students for high school. In the morning there were a couple presentations given by staff and student leaders to help familiarize students with the differences between elementary school and high school. Following that there were a couple ice breakers to help students make friends with their future classmates. The Grade 8s got to witness a regular lunchtime at MSS and afterwards were able to follow current Grade 9 students to their third period classes. Hopefully all of our incoming Grade 9s feel more prepared for the next step in their schooling and are ready to take the next step in their lives.

Wednesday, May 31 four MSS students went to Science North to attend a Climate Action conference. The group departed from the school at 7:15 am to make it in time for a day full of fun activities, eye-opening discussions and guest speakers. These students returned to MSS with new ideas and plans to make MSS an even more eco-conscious school.

On Thursday, June 8 MSS will be celebrating their incredible Grade 12 students at their graduation. Congratulations to everyone who is moving forward and taking these important next steps!

Last Friday, May 26 our school hosted the NOSSA Tennis event where our talented players showcased their skills. The team that accumulated the highest points overall won, and we’re proud to announce that MSS secured the NOSSA banner for the second time ever. Well done to all our participants!

That is all for this week! Until next time, go, Mustangs, go!
