Senior students are beginning preparations to graduate, four sports’ seasons are coming to an end, and the musical took its final curtain call.
While many senior students are thinking about booking their grad photos, on Wednesday, February 14, MSS hosted an assembly for the Grade 11 and 12 students on Sexual Assault in universities and colleges. The Hunting Ground is a video depicting the story of two young sexual assault survivors who started a nationwide campaign to hold universities accountable for not helping assault victims. The video made MSS students aware of issues around alcohol as a leading weapon in sexual violence. Assistant Crown Attorney Cecile Martin said, “This committee has a goal to contribute to the end of sexual violence, which is an almost impossible goal.” Students were reminded by Aboriginal Support Worker Ms. Jones that they should always report any issue around sexual violence, even if it doesn’t seem too serious.
The junior boys’ basketball team played against Espanola in the semifinals for NSSSA. Despite their strong game before the championships, the boys lost 25-68. The girls’ hockey team played their first championship game against L’Horizon on Thursday, February 15. The boys’ hockey team played their first championship game against Espanola on Wednesday, February 14. The boys lost 3-2, and played again on Thursday evening and won.
The senior and junior girls’ volleyball teams reached the end of their season at NSSSA. The seniors finished well in the league, and the juniors placed second.
Coach of the Senior Volleyball team, Mr. Wesno, said, “The girls had a great season. They were a fun team to work with and very talented volleyball players.”
The MSS Production of The Sound of Music finished its run on Saturday night. Between cast, crew and the live pit band, over eighty students, community members, parents, and teachers worked together to present a polished production to the nearly sold out crowds. Cast members and tech-crew packed together into the small backstage, rushing to switch microphones, suit jackets, and set pieces so no cues were missed. On Saturday night, the cast sang Mr. Scott a goodbye song to the tune of So long, Farewell, to bid him goodbye from the drama program. The Sound of Music was his last show directing at MSS. Following closing night, the team celebrated their hard work with cake, snacks, and lots of pictures. For many, who are graduating, the final bows were bittersweet.
On February 25, Carissa Holliday and I, along with other young orators from the Gore Bay and Little Current Legions, will compete in the Royal Canadian Legion Public Speaking regional competition in Levack. Competing in the Senior division, Carissa’s speech focuses on Solitary Confinement in Youth Detention Centres, while my speech focuses on Leaving Home.
Report cards for the end of first semester have been mailed out, semester one activities are coming to an end, but there is still much to look forward to at MSS. ‘Til next time, stay golden, Mustangs.
