MSS Kids in the Halls

There are lots of opportunities for the MSS Mustangs to show off their talents. 

The MSS sports teams have been hard at work representing our school. The girls’ basketball team played against Elliot Lake on Thursday, October 26. The girls won their game 43-26. The boys’ and girls’ hockey teams have started their training, and both teams have their first exhibition games coming up. The boys have their first exhibition game against Espanola on November 1, and their first regular season game against St. Charles on November 9. The girls had their first exhibition game against Espanola on October 31. 

Amber Wiwchar placed first in the midget girls’ category at NOSSA x-country in Mattawa and Marjorie Scott placed first in the junior girls category. Marjorie and Amber will both be advancing to OFSAA. OFSAA is in Petawawa on November 4. 

There was a college information session on October 30. Lots of students signed up to get information on the application process, how to apply for scholarships and other important parts of post-secondary education. Colleges and universities are still visiting MSS to give more details about their specific schools. 

MSS was in the Halloween spirit. On Monday, October 30, Students’ Council had a pumpkin carving contest. Ten teams participated and the winning team won Halloween candy. On Tuesday, October 31, Students’ Council organized a costume contest. Prizes were handed out to the funniest, scariest and best overall costume. 

SHARE/Go Green has been busy organizing We Scare Hunger: the annual canned food drive. Students from MSS will be going around communities on Halloween night to collect non-perishable food items. All of the food collected will be donated to Manitoulin Food Bank. Lots of students have signed up to collect, so households are asked to consider having cans to donate alongside their Halloween treats. All students are asked to bring in a canned good to support the campaign. Also, students are encourage to bring in a potluck item for the Three Fires whole school potluck on November 1. 

The robotics team is having a logo contest. The logo needs to represent the Island; have the team name, ‘Manitoulin Metal’; and have the team number, 6865. There will be a monetary prize, and Manitoulin Metal swag. 

This year’s production of The Sound of Music had its first rehearsal on Monday, October 30. The cast list has been finalized: April Torkopoulos as Maria, I am the Mother Abbess, Carissa Holliday as Sister Margaretta, Abbie Harper as Sister Berthe, Zoe Coulliard as Sister Sophia, Josh Noble as Captain Von Trapp, Lauren Goddard as Elsa Schraeder, Avery Byce as Max Detweiler, Kendra Jordison as Liesll, Grace Duncanson as Louisa, Larissa Chevrette as Friedrich, Jordan Goddard as Kurt, Cameron Meawasige as Brigitta, Aspen Debassige as Marta, Grace Tuerk as Gretl, Nick Harper as Rolfe, Amber Wahl as Herr Zeller, Jadah McGraw as Frau Schmidt, Owen Duncanson as Franz, Oliver Bowers as Baron Elberfield, and Shade Kaiser as Admiral Von Schreiber. The chorus includes Raine Farquhar, Alexandria Lewis, Eden Bowers, Darci Debassige, Jocelyn Kuntsi, Trish Patterson, Zara Farquhar, Katie Chapman and Morgan Dedman. 

MSS is full of many talents, in the arts, sports, and saving the world. ‘Til next time, stay golden, Mustangs.
