Mistrial declared in 2017 Wiiky home invasion assault case

GORE BAY – The trial for two Toronto area men in the May 2017 attack of a Wiikwemkoong man has been declared a mistrial and a new date will be set.

As was reported previously, on May 9, 2017 at approximately 12:32 am, Wikwemikong Tribal Police responded to a vicious attack in the area of Mshaaboos Lane in Wiikwemkoong.

Four suspects, who fled the scene but were arrested a short time later by the United Chiefs and Councils of Manitoulin (UCCM) Anishnaabe Police, were charged in 2017. 

The victim of the attack was sent to Health Sciences North with serious injuries following the Bayview Heights home invasion.

Angela Filazzola, a 25-year-old female from Scarborough, was charged with possession for the purposes of trafficking, trafficking in a controlled substance and conspiracy to traffic a controlled substance. Ms. Filazzola is currently missing and a warrant has been issued for her arrest.

Taun Dixon-Johnson, a 28-year-old male from Toronto, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault (endanger life and wounding) and assault with a weapon. The initial charges of attempted murder and drug trafficking have been dropped against him.

Shamar Shaw, a 25-year-old male from Pickering, has also been charged with two counts of aggravated assault (endanger life and wounding) and assault with a weapon. The charges of attempted murder and drug trafficking were also dropped against Mr. Shaw.

Billie-Jean Mills, a 24-year-old female from Sudbury, was charged with possession for the purposes of trafficking, trafficking in a controlled substance, conspiracy to traffic a controlled substance and failing to comply with a probation order (three counts). Ms. Mills has been released from prison due to time-served.

The trial for Mr. Shaw and Mr. Dixon-Johnson was slated to begin on September 16 and was declared a mistrial the following day, September 17. The Expositor will update the story when a date for the new trial becomes available.
