WIIKWEMKOONG—An exhaustive search for Adrian Gabriel (Gabe) Jacko ended in tragedy on Friday, January 19 when Mr. Jacko was discovered deceased. Mr. Jacko was reported missing from his Wiikwemkoong home on January 16. He was last seen at approximately 2:10 pm that afternoon.
A search for Mr. Jacko included efforts from community members who put posters up at Island businesses, went door to door and searched wooded and shoreline areas, as well as police search parties, including an Ontario Provincial Police helicopter, the Emergency Response Team and K-9 Unit.
A press release from Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory issued during the early evening hours of January 19 states, “With our deepest sympathies, we regret to inform the people of Wiikwemkoong, friends and neighbours that Gabe was located deceased in the early afternoon of January 19, 2024.”
Shelley Trudeau, Wiikwemkoong director of operations, acknowledged the many volunteer efforts that aided in the search for Mr. Jacko as well as those who gave of their time to ensure that the community search parties were fed, watered and dressed for the frigid temperatures. “The collective outpouring of support, cooperation and dedication from the community is truly remarkable. The family and the community of Wiikwemkoong genuinely and wholeheartedly appreciate the efforts and prayers of all.”
Ms. Trudeau also thanked the efforts of the police services as well as the Mnidoo Mnising Crisis Response Team, Wiikwemkoong administration, employees, communications and surveillance teams.
“We extend the most heartfelt condolences, prayers and respect to Gabe Jacko’s family during this difficult time,” Ms. Trudeau concluded.
