MANITOULIN—The Haweater tradition of the Miss Manitoulin pageant is back again this summer and organizers are seeking interested young women ages 13 to 24 to participate.
“Last year was so much fun and the girls all had a great time,” said committee member Robin Burridge.
“It is an excellent event and a wonderful opportunity for young ladies who want to gain experience with public speaking, modeling, build confidence or just meet new people and have fun,” added fellow committee member Crystal Madahbee. “There will also be great prizes for the contestants to win and the chance to represent Manitoulin Island at the Miss North Ontario pageant in Sudbury, as last year’s winner Brooke Debassige recently did.”
The pageant will be held on Thursday, July 31 at the Manitoulin Hotel and Conference Centre (one of the event’s sponsors) in Little Current and will feature a fashion show, talent portion and evening dress presentation.
“The contestants are required to find an Island business to sponsor them for the contest,” added committee member Robin Burridge. “The $100 sponsor donation will cover the contestant’s entry fee, sash (featuring their sponsor’s name), prizes and other associated costs.”

Application forms are available on the pageant’s Facebook page, at The Expositor office in Little Current (1 Manitowaning Road), or by emailing missmanitoulin@manitoulin.caEntries are due by Friday, June 27.
“Contestants will go through several steps to determine who will be crowned Miss Manitoulin,” explained Ms. Madahbee. “The first portion is a private one-on-one interview during the day with the judges. The personal interview portion of the competition will allow the contestants to converse with the judges on a variety of topics and showcase who they are as individuals.”
“The contestants will also be judged by their poise and confidence during a fashion show, featuring clothing from Island businesses,” said Ms. Burridge. “Following the fashion show, the contestants will deliver three minute speeches on the topic of their choosing, as it relates to Manitoulin, to the audience and judges while showing off their evening wear.”
“Following the speeches, the competition will be narrowed down by the judges, and the remaining girls will then perform their talents,” said Ms. Madahbee. “The evening will conclude with the crowning of Miss Manitoulin, who will not only represent Manitoulin at the Miss North Ontario pageant, but also represent Manitoulin at all of the weekend’s Haweater events.”
“The event is being proudly sponsored by the Manitoulin Hotel and Conference Centre, the Little Current Lions Club and The Manitoulin Expositor,” added Ms. Burridge. “We were extremely pleased with the young women who competed last year and the ladies that have showed interest in becoming Miss Manitoulin 2014 thus far, but are definitely looking for more contestants.”
