MANITOULIN—The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) has completed its fish stocking program for lakes around Manitoulin Island for this year while the ministry’s Upper Great Lakes Management Unit (UGLMU) is looking at similar stocking numbers for Lake Huron, specifically the North Channel and Georgian Bay this year, although its plans for stocking are still ongoing.
“Lakes that were stocked by the Sudbury district MNRF this past winter and spring included Otter (Whitefish) Lake, Lake Manitou and Tobacco Lake,” said Derrick Luetchford, resource management coordinator of MNRF Sudbury district. “The ministry stocked 1,500 splake into Otter (Whitefish) Lake, with Lake Manitou receiving 41,354 lake trout. Tobacco Lake is scheduled to receive 5,000 walleye later this summer.”
Ronald Green of the UGLMU told the Expositor in an email, “Lake Huron, specifically the North Channel and Georgian Bay had the following fish stocked in 2022: 1,036,524 lake trout, 165,547 rainbow trout, 166,413 brown trout, 159,794 chinook salmon and 65,000 walleye. Plans for stocking in 2023 are similar to 2022 and are currently ongoing.”
