Michael’s Bay Historical Society to carry clean up of townsite cemeteries

TEHKUMMAH—The Michael’s Bay Historical Society (MBHS) will be focussing on cleaning up the five cemeteries within its Michael’s Bay townsite this summer.

“We held a planning meeting (June 13) to look at what our main summer activities at the site are going to be,” said MBHS president Ben Lentir. “Our goal is to try and get the cemeteries cleaned up to make sure they are listed as being the proper size on the registry.”

As well, “all of the cemeteries and the townsite will in the future be open to the public so we want to clean up the cemetery areas, so if members of the public want to view a cemetery it will be easier to access,” said Mr. Lentir. He pointed out Moose Sagle was organizing a work bee earlier this week.

“We discovered an open well on the property which has been filled in by rocks, but we have barricaded this area off so that it will be safe,” said Mr. Lentir.

Mr. Lentir said, “In May we constructed a rail fence along the roadside (of the Michael’s Bay townsite property). What we found last year was some people were driving through the property, camping on, having open fires and leaving their garbage.”

“That is what we have started on so far, and our goals through the summer are to work on activities and cleaning up the cemetery sites,” added Mr. Lentir.
