MHC Auxiliary News

Volunteer Week was earlier this month! The theme “Volunteers are the Roots of Strong Communities” reflects the strength, dedication and tenacity of all volunteers.

Members of the Auxiliary were recognized at two functions. On Tuesday, April 12, many attended Volunteer Night put on by NEMI.

Each attendee received a gift and snacks and good music were enjoyed by all. On Thursday, April 14, CEO Derek Graham and Pat Morka attended the opening of our regular meeting. The CEO emphasized the importance and dedication of the Auxiliary to work together to enhance patient services at the Manitoulin Health Centre. We were treated to some yummy squares and refreshments. Thank you to NEMI and the Manitoulin Health Centre for your recognition, encouragement and support.

Events of the past month including the casserole dinner, book sale and coin box collection were successful. In all aspects, the casserole dinner was a super supper. Remember to get your tickets in advance for this event. Our regular fundraisers continue to supply us with working capital.  Remember that when you buy a HELPP Lottery ticket, you are always a winner as all money raised has to go toward equipment purchases.

Here are some events to look forward to:

A Book Sale will be held on Friday, April 29 from 5 to 9 pm and Saturday, April 30 from 9 am till 2 pm in the Cafeteria at the MHC in Little Current. One special is craft magazines for free. There will be other specials.

The Auxiliary will be a member of the NEMI Farmers’ Market again this year. Not only will we continue our book sales but will be selling other items including one of a kind double-sided ornaments painted on wood by Duncan Pheasant. They are a unique purchase for locals and visitors alike. Only 50 are available.

There was discussion on other projects but no firm commitment at this time.

The regular meeting was followed by the Annual General Meeting. At this meeting the members elect officers, make constitutional changes and look back on the whole year. Written reports are presented to the membership for acceptance and handed in to the Secretary.

Over the year, the Constitution was reviewed and updated to reflect current concerns. The vote was unanimous to accept. The CEO, Derek Graham, and president Dave Sylvester signed the document, making it official.

Elections were held for president, vice-president, treasurer and secretary. For 2016-2017 the officials are as follows: President Elaine Moore, Vice-President Dawn Orr, Treasurer Marilee Hore and Secretary Sue Lafreniere.

Under the new constitution, names of representatives are presented by the Nominating Committee or chosen by the president. Many of the same representatives will continue in their roles listed above. In addition, Carole Labelle is for Publicity and Dawn Orr for Goodwill.

In looking back the president thanked everyone for their efforts and support over the year.

On behalf of all members, thank you Dave for an exemplary job. You were aware of the issues that are faced by such a group and led us with tenacity and strength.
