The 2014 National Volunteer Week Appreciation Certificate “Volunteer Work Speaks Volumes” presented to the Little Current Manitoulin Health Centre Auxiliary by CEO Derek Graham on behalf of the staff and board of directors Thursday night at the auxiliary’s April meeting does in fact speak volumes as to the appreciation they have for the work that the auxiliary does to assist them in the commitment to the patients of the Manitoulin Health Centre. Mr. Graham and Mary Lynn Wright, director of nursing, attended the meeting to make the presentation and to cater to the members with coffee and treats. Mr. Graham thanked the auxiliary for the work and dedication over the years and the recent donations toward the purchase of monitoring equipment in the Digital Imaging Department and the to the ongoing bed buying program.

The annual Hospital Auxiliary Association of Ontario Northeast Region conference was in Mattawa this past weekend. Manitoulin was well represented with Leila Thureson, region president, along with Secretary Joan Beard, both from the Mindemoya MHC Auxiliary. Representing Little Current MHC Auxiliary are Marilee Hore, past president of the region, and Dianne Musgrove, the region’s first vice president. Little Current members also attending were June McConnell, Ted Musgrove and Elaine Moore. This year’s event was hosted by Mattawa and organized with the assistance of Wawa and Killarney. This is an opportunity each spring to share ideas on special events and fundraising.

The Northeast Region of the Hospital Auxiliary Associations of Ontario (HAAO) encompasses 15 auxiliaries from New Liskeard in the north south to Parry Sound and Sault Ste. Marie in the west to Mattawa in the east.

There is one more Book Sale for the spring on April 25 and 26, Friday night from 7 to 9 pm and Saturday from 10 am until 2 pm. This will be the last opportunity until the sales begin in the fall. There will be books available at the Farmers’ Market during the summer months.

The Auxiliary has decided to sell Vesey spring bulbs. Orders must be in by May 1. Members have brochures, price lists and order forms and will be contacting you in the next few weeks. There are many beautiful spring bulbs to choose from. Brochures and order forms are also being left at the hospital, medical centre and schools for the staff to consider.

The annual general meeting followed the regular meeting for year-end reports and the election of officers and chairpersons for 2014-15. The new executive consists of President Dave Sylvester, Vice President Barbara Baker, Treasurer Marilee Hore and Secretary Sue Lafreniere. The chairpersons are In-Memoriam Barbara Lawrence, HELLP Lottery Tickets Marilee Hore, Membership Leona Sylvester and Tuck Cart-Showcase June McConnell. Caitlin Young is chairperson for Goodwill and Facebook. Laila Kiviaho will look after publicity and Dave Sylvester will continue as coin box collection chair and act as Hospital Board Liaison.

May 1 is our next regular meeting at 7 pm in the hospital boardroom. New members are always welcome to attend our meetings and to consider helping in our work to assist the hospital fulfill its mission for caring for patients and to assist the board in their funding efforts.
