WIIKWEMKOONG—As the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory prepares for the promised replacement of it 50-year-old nursing home with a larger, state-of-the-art facility, the community and its friends are working hard to fundraise for the community share of the cost if building a new, 94-bed home.

This weekend, Victoria Day holiday weekend, all the stops are pulled out for the Wiiky Nursing Home’s Music Festival, Saturday and Sunday, May 20 and 21.

All events are scheduled for Thunderbird Park, by the powwow grounds.

The lineup features special appearances by Ivan Flett Memorial Dancers and by the Creeland Dancers. The Ivan Flett Dancers are three siblings from Winnipeg who embody the perfection of the Red River Jig, a traditional dance to fiddle music, and their own addition to the genie, the ‘hip hop jig.’

The Creeland Dancers hail from Saskatchewan and are considered Western Canada’s finest square dance triple.

Both Creeland Dancers and the Ivan Flett Memorial Dancers promise high-energy, entertaining shows for this important fundraising event.

But there’s more, lots more, scheduled for this weekend. There are musical presentations by Jim Jacobs, Beatrice Love, Derek Miller, Terri Anne Strongarm as well as a Johnny Cash tribute by the Wiky3.

Part of the big event is a two-day craft market and the Wiikwemkoong Fashion Showcase on Saturday from 1 to 2:30 pm.

J and S Backyard Party Rentals will set up at Thunderbird Park both days with bouncy castles, basketball arcade, mini putt, bumper cars, a toddler play area and much more.

And every major event needs a car show. The one this weekend is on Saturday, from 1 to 4 pm.

Weekend passes are available for the best deals for an important cause. They are reasonably priced at $15 for youths/students, $45 for adults and $40 for elders.
