MARTHA CHRISTY-BURT
“MARTY”
October 4, 1930 – May 3, 2024
Martha E. “Marty” Christy- Burt, 93 of Fremont, Ohio, USA and Kagawong, Ontario, passed away Friday, May 3, 2023 at her daughter’s residence in Charleston, WV, USA. She was born October 4, 1930 in Fremont Ohio, the daughter of William and Mary (Bimer) Rothacker. Marty was known for her artistic talent as a skilled glass blower with a penchant for vibrant colour, both in her art and in her life. To own a piece of her work is a treasure. Alongside her former husband the late Earl Christy, she was also Vice President of The Christy Knife Co. She was an avid reader owning hundreds of books, a chocolate lover and a rock and fossil collector, and never met a flower she didn’t like. She was a long-time member of St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church in Kagawong. Marty enjoyed vacationing every summer in Kagawong at the Christy Cottage, a tradition that ran from 1962 until Earl’s passing in 2006. Marty continued the tradition, travelling by herself from Fremont to Manitoulin and having many friends and family members join her for visits throughout the summer. It was during one of these summer visits that she met Edward Burt, also recently widowed, and the two fell in love. Marty was set to return to the States, but instead changed her plans and became a full-time permanent Manitoulin resident, marrying Ed and becoming part of the Burt family. Together they worked to maintain beautiful and bountiful gardens, preserve the land and leave a minimal footprint. When she and Ed married, she made no distinction between her children and grandchildren and Ed’s children and grandchildren and loved them all equally. She leaves behind 12 children and their spouses, 43 grandchildren and their spouses and partners, 57 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grand children and her brother. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Earl Christy, two grandchildren, one great-grandchild and her sister. A Celebration of Life will take place Wednesday, July 10 at 7 pm at the Kagawong Park Center. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, Kagawong.
