December 14,1922 – December 13, 2014
Florence was the daughter of Denis and Florence Callaghan, born in Little Current and raised in Sheguindah. Florence worked at various jobs, met Elgin and they were married in 1943. After working a short time in Sudbury they moved to McGregor Bay, where they became caretakers at a private lodge. Their son Wayne was born at this time. Florence and Elgin changed employers and began working at a lodge owned by a US corporation headed by the Polk family. Their final move in McGregor Bay was to work at the Polk’s private lodge where they remained until 1986 when Elgin passed. Although Florence dearly missed Elgin, she made the best of life joining community activities and focusing on her three grandsons, all the while knitting mitts, socks and a variety of items as well as smocking tiny dresses. Her knitting continued until the fall of 2014 when arthritis in her thumbs made knitting too difficult. As the years progressed arthritis in her knees was a big issue but this did not affect Florence’s weekly trips to the Seniors Drop-In and out to supper with friends. She was always ready to join in whether it was, a family get-together or a supper with friends at her favourite restaurant. Florence wished to remain in her own home and did with minimal help until the fall of 2014 when she moved into the Manitoulin Centennial Manor. The transition was not easy for Florence but she made the best of it joining in Manor activities. On November 30 Florence suffered a serious stroke causing paralysis to her right side leaving her unresponsive to the time of her passing. Family and friends were with her until the end (special thank you to Terry and Myrna). Beloved mother of Wayne (Anna). Cherished “Wee Gramma” of Mark (April), Kurtis (Gloria), Drew, Chris (Kelly), Tanya (Kyle) and Great “Wee Gramma” to Cole, Landon, Sawyer, Hudson, Violet, Griffin and Roslyn. Survived by sisters Goldie Cunningham (Ralph), Linda Kelly (Larry) and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brothers Austin (Ila), Jim (Vera), Lloyd (Geraldine), Keith (Florence) and Bernard (Ann). Predeceased by sisters Bernice, Marion (Mike) and Dorothy. Visitation was from 7 pm to 9 pm on Tuesday, December 16, 2014. Funeral Service is at 11 am on Wednesday, December 17, 2014; all at Island Funeral Home. Burial at Mountainview Cemetery.
