SANDFIELD—The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) is taking a measure this spring that should help to manage water levels in Lake Manitou.
“We managed to secure assurance from the ministry that they will replace the logs at the Sandfield dam to help manage water levels in Lake Manitou,” said Mike Costigan, chair of the Lake Manitou and Area Association (LMAA) last week.
“It’s a difficult job managing lake levels with climate and weather changes,” said Mr. Costigan. “The current logs at the dam are definitely leaking. I had mentioned that even during the summer about a year and a half ago, that there was a lot of leakage through the logs at the dam.”

Mr. Costigan explained the ministry had carried out similar work at the Lake Mindemoya dam, replacing the logs there at the dam. “I contacted Chad Mulligan of the MNR, who I reach out to every spring and fall to find out what the ministry strategy is for the dam. He mentioned the water leaks at the Sandfield dam and Mr. Mulligan indicated that the logs, which have not been replaced in approximately 25 years, will be replaced this spring.”
“This should help with management of the water levels in the lake,” added Mr. Costigan.
