TORONTO—Manitoulin is blessed with outstanding family physicians and last week one of those very special people was recognized by the Ontario College of Family Physicians (CFPC) for exemplifying “the best of what being a family doctor is all about” during a gala award ceremony held at Toronto’s Royal York Hotel.
“It was lovely,” said Dr. Reade of the gala, noting that she was “thrilled” at receiving the award. “It was an honour to be included among so many family physicians.”
The Family Physician of the Year Award recognizes “an outstanding CFPC family physician member from Ontario who exemplifies the best of what being a family doctor is all about, including exceptional care of patients combined with a significant contribution to the health and well being of communities and society in general.”
The award citation noted that “Dr. Maurianne Reade has practised as a rural physician in Mindemoya since 2001. Following graduation from the University of Alberta and working in Western Canada, Dr. Reade found the beauty of Manitoulin Island and the collaborative model of practice irresistible. She appreciates the strengths of the rural community she calls home: patients who welcome medical learners; supportive colleagues at daily hospital rounds; a wonderful hospital auxiliary that contributed to early adoption of point-of-care ultrasound; inter-professional colleagues with whom she developed a novel wilderness medicine course; and Debajehmujig Storytellers, collaborators on medical education projects.”
The citation goes on to note that “Dr. Reade is an associate professor at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, a board member of the Physician Clinical Teachers Association and an executive member of the OMA Academic Medicine Forum and Rural Expert Panel. She earned the CCFP(EM) designation in 2012” and that “Dr. Reade and her husband, Craig Maxwell, enjoy making maple syrup, canoeing, hiking, skiing, snowshoeing and reading.”
Dr. Reade was nominated for the award by Northern Ontario School of Medicine Family Medicine Co-chairs Dr. Chris Rossi and Dr. Barbara Zelek and her colleagues at the Central Manitoulin Family Team Dr. Frances Kilbertus, Dr. Nick Jeeves and Dr. Andy Stadnyk.
“I feel honoured to be part of such a great family practice, colleagues and supportive community,” said Dr. Reade. “Manitoulin has been a wonderful community in which to live and work.”
