Re: Once again Manitoulin students lead the way
I am not sure who authored the editorial in The Manitoulin Expositor on January 13, 2016, but I am extremely pleased with the reference to “As usual, the young people at Manitoulin Island’s two high schools…”
Two points to me are notable:
“Manitoulin students,” as stated, is extremely inclusive. When the “two high schools” are referred to I cannot think how often when speaking or engaging people in education, constantly talk to me about the only high school on the Island or some go as far as to say the “only act in town” is the Rainbow District School Board’s Manitoulin Secondary School. Not so! Rainbow administration are the first to correct this misleading statement. We have a First Nations trustee as well on our board and we have First Nations boards of education. Unlike Sudbury, who have other school boards there, I am unaware of any Catholic or separate school boards on the Manitoulin Island.
In the context of English public secondary schools, yes, a true comment, but our equally respectable world class and close friends at Wikwemikong High School is also one of the two secondary schools on the Manitoulin Island.
The second point is the media recognizing and alluding to the point (two schools), while being inclusive, the excellent work that Manitoulin students, Manitoulin Secondary and Wikmwemikong High School, are not only doing, but how they are leading the way.
I am proud, as are others, of all of our Manitoulin students: elementary, secondary, Rainbow Board or First Nations boards of education.
