Manitoulin taxi driver charged in sexual assault complaints

SHEGUIANDAH–On September 29 at 4:30 am, Manitoulin OPP were notified of a sexual assault complaint involving a 19-year-old female. The allegation was that the young woman was being transported by a male taxi driver when the alleged assault took place. Upon investigation, police learned that another young woman, a 24-year-old, came forward with a similar allegation of sexual assault by the same male while being transported in his taxi. After further investigation the man was located and arrested. He was employed by a local taxi service at the time of the alleged offences. He is no longer employed by the taxi service.

The man has been identified as a 70-year-old of Sheguiandah. He has been charged with two counts of sexual assault Section 271 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused was released on a promise to appear on an undertaking with conditions and will be appearing in Gore Bay Criminal Court on Monday, October 29.
