The team from Espanola prevailed at the inaugural North Shore Pickleball Tournament held in Blind River, July 24. The Espanola team of 17 was made up of 10 players from the Manitoulin Pickleball Club. (Jean Rance, Bud Hebner, Nolan Lafleur, Glen Boisvert, Megan Boisvert, Jim Veitch, Darry Resmer, Phil Candelaria, John Rance and Dan Leger.) Congrats.

Aurel’s on it!

Wiikwemkoong’s Aurel Fox-Recollet continues to train hard and that has led to another win! Recently, he won the Conquer the Crater 10k race by a couple of minutes! Aurel says he has been taking it easy but is obviously having success. He’s been maintaining steady mileage, with the occasional faster run.  Next up, Aurel is part of the defending team at the unique, annual Beaton Classic quadrathlon! He was scouted to run to do a 7.5km trail run leg last year and they won so they are looking to repeat on Aug. 13th!

Track and Fielders!

A quartet of track athletes from the island competed in the Royal Canadian Legion Provincial Championships the weekend of July 11-13 at York University in Toronto.  M’Chigeeng’s Ava Corbiere competed in the 1500m and the 2000m Steeplechase, setting a personal best (pb) in the steeplechase. Jack Carter of Little Current competed in the 100m, the long jump and the triple jump.  Mindemoya’s Sadie Bridgeman competed in the long jump and beat her pb by a whopping 11 cm, good enough for 4th place, and Jonah Balfe of Newby’s Bay competed in to discus and the javelin throw, added an astounding 4m to his pb in javelin, for a 3rd place finish!

Sons of Pitches!

Gerard Baibomcowai not only organizes events in Wiky he even gets teams together for road trips. This past weekend he put together some Island kids to attend the second annual, Mush Golden Glove tourney in Timmins with three teams!

The U-13 team is now 2024 champions! The team was in second place after four round robin games. In the semis, Sunday morning vs. the Moose Factory Red Sox came from behind to win 13-12! In the title match, the locals played the team from Winneway, Quebec who handed them their only loss on the weekend which made their 15 – 8 win even sweeter.

Kudos to players: Lilly Kanasawe, Taiya Gonawabi, Breeze Osawamick, Taydym Gonawabi, Memphis Contin, Damian Dell, Koda Peltier, Luka Manitowabi, Arlo McGregor, Brooklynn Toulouse, Evander Shawana, Brayson McGregor, Jacen Simon, Treilyn Gonawabi and Logan Peltier. Coaches: Kyle Baibomcowai, Ralph Gonawabi and Lyle Baibomcowai.

The U18 boys lost to the Mush Cuppers while the Wiky Sons of Pitches men lost to Moose Factory tribe in the semis also. Congratulations to everyone involved!

Mud Run

A proud papa needs to report that my daughter, Hailey Leblanc participated in Ottawa’s Mudgirl event and I can hear her eyes rolling from here!

Since the inception of MUDGIRL, they’ve donated $312,000 to charities across North America and Europe, embodying our commitment to supporting important causes and making a meaningful difference in the fight against breast cancer. So, take that Hailey!
