MANITOULIN—Manitoulin Special Olympics (MSO) bowlers brought home seven medals from a national games qualifier recently.
“We had 11 five-pin bowlers who participated in a qualifier for the 2024 national winter games, on April 29 in Sudbury,” said MSO coordinator and coach Janet Anning. The MSO bowlers included Norman Daoust, John Hopkin, William Leclair, Tyler Madahbee, Aaron Nickol, Bruce VanHorn, David Gagne, Elizabeth Cooper, Linda McCulligh, Anna Bateman and Clarissa Moggy. MSO coaches included Ms. Anning, Sandra Graham, Roslyn Taylor, Herve Leclair and Kathy McNichol.
Taking first place and winning a gold medal in his division was John Hopkin, while David Gagne won a silver medal for second place in his division. Five MSO bowlers, Norman Daoust, Aaron Nickol, Tyler Madahbee, Clarissa Moggy and Elizabeth Cooper all brought home bronze medals.
“We were able to travel and take part in the event in Sudbury with the assistance of the funds that had been raised last year through the annual Bluegrass in the Country event which will take place again this year June 9-11,” said Ms. Anning.
“At this point we don’t know if any of our bowlers will qualify for the national games,” said Ms. Anning. “We are waiting to hear if any of our athletes in our bowling, curling or snowshoe teams are going to be selected for the national winter games taking place February 26-March 3, 2024, in Calgary, Alberta.”
