Manitoulin Secondary School students earn trades bursaries

M’CHIGEENG—Three Manitoulin Secondary School students have earned $1,000 bursaries from the Ministry of Education and the Rainbow District School Board.

Guidence councillor Chris Theijsmeijer explained The Skilled Trades Bursaries are awarded to students in Co-op who are going into the skilled trades after high school. “These are June awards,” he said, “not our regular Awards Night thing.”

Receiving the awards were Layne Albert, Brett Mastelko and Lucas Wright.

The new Ontario Skilled Trades Bursary Program provides a $1,000 bursary to individual students who wish to pursue a post-secondary skilled trades pathway. Eligible candidates are selected based on the following criteria: the candidate is enrolled at one of the province’s secondary schools and in Grade 11 or 12; the candidate is enrolled in a cooperative education program and has earned, or is earning, two credits working in a skilled trade placement; the candidate has post-secondary plans to pursue a career in the skilled trades; and the candidate demonstrated leadership in the skilled trade, for instance mentorship, participating in a conference or sharing experiences to the broader student population.

The bursary is intended to encourage students to explore the potential of a career in the skilled trades and to assist in overcoming any financial or other barriers that might inhibit their entry into the trades.
