M’CHIGEENG—Despite playing very well against the best ‘A’ division level high school volleyball teams that North Bay and Sudbury have to offer and having tied for first place after round-robin tournament play the Manitoulin Secondary School (MSS) Mustangs junior boys’ volleyball team narrowly missed playing in the Northern Ontario Secondary School Association (NOSSA) finals.
The Mustangs, who had won the North Shore Secondary School Association (NSSSA) ‘A’ championship earlier this month, qualified and took part in the NOSSA championship in Sudbury (MacDonald-Cartier Secondary School) on November 14-15.
Andrew Argall, coach of the MSS team explained the Mustangs, “finished round-robin play tied for first place with a two win-one loss record after battling to a tough win against the host MacDonald-Cartier Panthers. However, our team did not advance to the finals due to the tie-breaking formula not going in our favour.”
However, “The Mustangs left Sudbury having made their school, coach and community extremely proud with their effort and sportsmanship,” said Mr. Argall. “One official remarked at the end of round-robin play that it was some of the best junior boys’ volleyball they had ever seen!”
Mr. Argall added, “the team now goes to the drawing board in the off-season to refine their skills, aspiring to future NOSSA (and OFSSA) appearances, especially those moving up to potentially join the senior boys’ volleyball team next season.”
