M’CHIGEENG—With a record number of generous community sponsors the 55th annual Manitoulin Secondary School (MSS) Awards ceremony held Thursday, December 19, again this year, set a record for the highest amount of monetary distributed to MSS students.
“With a record number of sponsors this year we gave out very close to $70,000 to be awarded to our graduates this year,” stated MSS principal David Wiwchar. “This is a special event designed to hour our graduates.”
“We are proud of our graduates,” said Mr. Wiwchar. “They are a part of Manitoulin Secondary School’s wonderful history. Their contributions have left a unique mark on our school. It is our sincere hope that we have been able to prepare our graduates with the skills necessary to be successful in their chosen area of interest. We, at Manitoulin Secondary School, have every confidence that our graduates will continue to be outstanding citizens of our Canadian communities. We are grateful to have had the chance to know them and assist them in accomplishing their goals.”
“We thank our parents and community for their ongoing, overwhelming support (of MSS),” continued Mr. Wiwchar. “We are truly a community school. It is due to the generous contributions of our community that we are able to assist our students in their post secondary school endeavours. To the numerous businesses, individuals, service groups, community groups, and organizations who have contributed, thank you for your ongoing sponsorship.”
“The Manitoulin Student Aid Committee is made up of caring people from across our community and has worked very hard to ensure that the following awards have been distributed appropriately and fairly. We extend our thanks to this group of people for their dedication to the organization and for their care and concern for our students,” said Mr. Wiwchar.
After the processional of award recipients led by Chris Theijsmeijer and the opening remarks by Principal Wiwchar, everyone took part in the signing of ‘O Canada led by Taylor Goodfellow and Cameron Weawasige accompanied by Mr. Theijsmeijer.
Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Michael Mantha, Rainbow District School Board trustee Lisa Corbiere-Addison, RDSB Superintendent of Schools Lesley Fisher, delivered greetings and words of encouragement.
MPP Mantha encouraged the graduates to, “challenge authority, change things and move things forward in the future and make sure lives are changed for the better.”
Ms. Corbiere-Addison welcomed, “everyone home. This is one family here at Manitoulin Secondary School and Manitoulin Island. I thank all the volunteers, staff, chairs, the Manitoulin Student Aid Committee, and others for their tremendous work.”
“Todays world is challenging,” said Ms. Corbiere-Addison. “Together we are strong. Be strong and build your skills, be resourceful, open minded in all your endeavours and remember the tremendous support you feel tonight.”
