MANITOULIN – The efforts of students of Manitoulin Secondary School and elementary schools around the Island are helping to make the lives of those in need a little brighter at this time of the year. Through the We Scare Hunger program, students collected food items on Halloween to be forwarded to the Manitoulin Food Bank.
“Absolutely, what the students have done is helping the food bank and people who access it,” said Marnie Hall, executive director of Manitoulin Family Resources (MFR), on Friday of last week. “I understand students across the Island went out on halloween, not for candy, but to collect food items for the food bank,” she said.
Ms. Hall pointed out the collected and donated items of food and financial donations provided by the general Island community to the students (and given to the food bank), “is all necessary for what we are planning for December and the Christmas food baskets that will be given to families. This is something we annually work on with other community groups. For instance, there are a couple of food drives upcoming, the OPP and MNRF (Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry) are doing one together and the UCCM (police) will be holding their annual Stuff a Cruiser event. She pointed out the Manitoulin Food Bank also received a good donation from the Grace Bible Church, last week.
MSS teacher Yana Bauer told the Recorder last Wednesday, “MSS staff and students from Share/Go Green dropped off the collected food from the Halloween We Scare Hunger event at the Manitoulin Food Bank (In Mindemoya) on Thursday. The team of approximately 30 students collected over 1,200 items despite the discouraging weather. Elementary schools, Charles C. McLean (Gore Bay), Central Manitoulin Public School (MIndemoya), and Assiginack Public School (Manitowaning) also participated, collecting 121, 87 and 92 items respectively. Monetary donations were also collected totaling over $150.”
