Manitoulin man arrested for assaulting police

On Sunday, December 6 at 11:45 pm, the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting a RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Enforcement) stop check on Clover Valley Road near the Rainbow Ridge Golf Course in Assiginack Township.

An unidentified female had approached officers explaining she had a set of keys for a vehicle which housed a highly intoxicated male. Officers went to investigate and another male began to obstruct the officers, becoming belligerent and allegedly spat into one of the officer’s faces. He was arrested and taken into custody.

As a result of this investigation, a 34-year-old male of Wikwemikong First Nation has been arrested and charged with the following offenses: assault police and threatening death or bodily harm, all contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused was later released from custody on a Promise to Appear with conditions to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice on January 26, 2016 in Gore Bay.
