Manitoulin Island’s first ‘Comicon’ Saturday in Wiikwemkoong

BUZWAH—Dig into your closets and attics and dust off those copies of Marvel and DC comic books; Manitoulin’s first Comic Expo is coming Saturday, June 17.

“This will be one of three we have planned for the summer,” said Rick Leedham, of Buzwah Variety, who is hosting the event. “Based on how the first one goes, we will decide on the next two.”

Mr. Leedham said he was inspired by another Wiikwemkoong resident who said he was planning on organizing a Comicon last summer, but had not moved forward with his plans. “If he does decide to move forward, we can coordinate for the third one later in the summer or early fall,” he said.

Buzwah Variety has been a major player in the Wiikwemkoong community when it comes to sponsoring local fundraising drives, such as that for the new elders’ residence.

There will be 12 tables at the Wiikwemkoong Comic Expo, with door prizes and giveaways, explained Mr. Leedham. “In addition to comic books to trade and sell, there will be sports, non-sports, autographs, action figures and other collectibles.”

Hockey, baseball, WWE, Pokemon, Dragonball Z, Magic the Gathering, comic book character paintings, prints and drawings will all be on hand.

Mr. Leedham noted that he will have some superhero photo props on hand, including the ever-popular Deadpool. “Somebody else is doing a photo booth,” he said.

Participants will have an opportunity to spin-to-win a Shane Wright rookie card.

The Comic Expo will take place from 11 am to 5 pm at the mini mall at 2098 Wikwemikong Way (N’Bwaachwen Centre, beside Wiikwemkoong Tourism).
