MANITOWANING—The NSSSAA (North Shore Secondary School Athletics Association) annual fall golf tournament was hosted this year on Manitoulin Island at the Rainbow Ridge Golf Course. (The tournament rotates among four different venues, coming to Manitoulin once every four years, on leap years as it happens.)
Both Island high schools had full teams at the event, with MSS golf team coach MS. Lisa Corbiere-Addison’s squad pulling down second place among the field of eight participating teams.
Defending champions Elliot Lake Secondary School took home the hardware again this year as the results of the September 27 tournament were tallied. ELSS will proceed to the Northern Ontario championships.
While the team represented the boys division as no school has been able to muster enough girls to field a golf squad, girls did participate in the tournament and Wikwemikong High School’s Delaney Trudeau, a Grade 10 student, was the individual winner of a prize for the longest putt on the 18th hole.
Tournament host and Wikwemikong High School golf coach Jamie McCarville was pleased with the turnout of 40 golfers from the eight schools that came from as far west as just outside Sault Ste. Marie. These include, in addition to the two Island schools, Espanola, Elliot Lake, Blind River, Central Algoma and two Francophone schools on the North Shore.
Rainbow Ridge Golf Course manager John Dube said the golfers came for an early breakfast at the clubhouse, played a round of 18 holes, and had lunch before the winners were announced.
