Manitoulin Island elementary school chess champions crowned

MANITOWANING—Six Manitoulin elementary schools took part in the Island chess tournament held at Assiginack Public School in Manitowaning last week. Champions in two divisions were crowned.

Participating schools included Pontiac School, Lakeview School, Charles C. McLean Public School, Central Manitoulin Public School, Little Current Public School and Assiginack Public School.  There were eight students sent from each school for a total of 48 students in total competing.

Students were grouped in A and B divisions, in both junior and senior groupings, and participated in round-robin play. The quarter finals saw the top six players from the A division and the top two players from the B division advance into the final playdowns.

In the junior division, Macie Setterington of Assiginack Public School took on Ben Dewar of Central Manitoulin Public School. The latter, Mr. Dewar, was crowned as the champion.

In the senior division, the final match was between Liam Bebonang of Lakeview School against Nathan Temple of C.C. McLean Public School. The 2017 champion is Liam Bebonang.

The tournament was organized by Joanne Peltier, Jeremy Mailloux and Janet McCarville.
