Manitoulin Community Choir celebrates spring with an open air concert

KAGAWONG—The sun was shining and the air was crisp with a slight cool breeze coming from the lake, but Jane Best and the Manitoulin Community Choir warmed up the evening air with their beautiful songs.

Manitoulin Community Choir put on quite the concert this past Saturday evening. The concert was an outdoors event at the Pavilion in Kagawong.

The outdoor event started at 7 pm and wrapped up shortly after 8 pm.

Before performing a song, Ms. Best would give insight and history of where the songs came from and the meaning behind them. The first song that opened the night was called ‘The Peace of the Earth,’ a traditional blessing that comes from Guatemala. Ms. Best went on the explain that the song wishes all the peacefulness of the mountains the rivers and the oceans.

Following the opening song was ‘Blue Moon,’ a love song from the 1930s. When it came time for the choir to sing ‘10,000 Reasons,’ the choir director best told the audience of an email she received of the late Mary Buie. Ms. Best goes on to say that the email from Mary opened with ‘I’ve been having a great time today planning my funeral.’ Ms. Buie asked her if the choir would sing ‘10,000 Reasons’ at her celebration of life and Ms. Best went to the choir and asked if they could do it and the choir gave a resounding ‘yes.’

Each song was sung with such power and energy from everyone in Manitoulin Community Choir. The last song of the evening was ‘Keep You in Peace’ with accompanying guitar by Peter Gordon. As Ms. Best thanked the crowd for coming and gave thanks to the choir she was presented with a bouquet of flowers from the choir, as was Mike McCormick, the accompanist.
