Manitoulin Centennial Manor tops in resident satisfaction

LITTLE CURRENT—Manitoulin Centennial Manor Administrator Don Cook could not admit he was totally surprised when the Manor scored high on a resident’s satisfaction survey, noting that he, along with the rest of the management team, has great pride in the care and dedication of his frontline staff. But he was pleasantly surprised to learn that the Manor came in at the top of the ranks when the results were tallied. The Manor came in first among the 125 Extendicare-managed homes in Ontario.

“This is a very special award,” noted Mr. Cook. “It’s special because it reflects on the entire staff. This has come about because of the work of everyone on staff here at the Manor.”

Resident and family feedback is crucial to improving care, he noted, “that’s why each year Extendicare conducts experience surveys with residents and their families in every Extendicare long-term care home.”

Residents and their families are asked for their input regarding their experiences with Extendicare, seeking “input on their journey with Extendicare across many areas, including quality of care and services being provided in their home, activity programming, cleanliness and maintenance and the food and meals.”

Each year, the results help nursing homes assess those experiences, their performance, and especially to help identify opportunities for improvement. “The survey feedback we receive is critical to achieving that goal,” he noted.

The 2023 survey was carried out at all long-term care homes and included responses from approximately 73.1 percent of the resident population and 29.5 percent of families across the Extendicare long-term care homes.

To give a sense of just how impressive the Manor’s accomplishment recognized by this award is, the overall results of the resident and family survey found that, taken all together, Extendicare homes found some 80.7 percent of residents and families said they would recommend Extendicare homes to others—going on to praise four particular aspects of their experience: 83.2 percent had positive feedback on laundry, cleaning and maintenance; 83 percent expressed satisfaction with continence care products; 80.9 percent said they were happy with relationships with others; and 80 percent were pleased with care services.

Each long-term care home has shared their results with the residents, their families and team members.
